Still Whitehorse

  June 11, 2013 Tuesday, clear 51*

This is our last day in Whitehorse. Yesterday we made a Walmart run and got fueled for the next leg of our trip which will take us to Dawson city, Yukon which is a 327 mile drive with some possibly bad road along that way.  This is the last stop before we enter Alaska which will be the town of Chicken another 119 mile distance. This road is known as the top of the world highway road or Klondike.

I got the cab of out RV put back together and now have to wait till we take off to see if our squeak is gone but I feel pretty confident it is. I got the cab over all sealed and I covered the foam backing that was squeaking against the top of the cab roof with material. It better work or that headliner is coming out permenantly ! We have already driven 4000 miles listening to that squeak and our nerves are rattled.

Today we are going into town to visit some museums, they have a Transportation museum and a Copper mine and railway museum. Also along the way is the largest weather vane made from a DC3 airplane and beside it is the Yukon Berinia Interpretive museum where they have a Wolly Mammoth skeleton.

This campground is on the edge of town with a lot of highways nearby and an airport which fortunately not very busy but they have signs posted around the campground that bears have been seen in the vincinity so to be careful. Having said that, I grilled out ribeyes and potatoes last night. Fortunately we got to eat it and not the bears. :)

Sunday night Terry and Dale split from us for a night to go spend the night at a friend of theirs nearby, they were fully armed with information about how the roads are and where to and not to stop along the way.

Let me tell you, there really is no darkness this time of year here. We are still a couple  hundred miles south of  Fairbanks and here in Whitehorse the sun set LoL at 11:30 pm and came rose at 4:30. Problem is it really can't go low enough this time of year to np be out if sight, I guarantee you that at 2oclock in the morning you can still go outside and read a paper no problem! It's an odd feeling for sure to see so much daylight. By the end of the week we should be on Alaskan time which will be 4 hours behind home time. This is going to be a killer coming back home at any type of accelerated pace. We have already adjusted to being up till 10-11 pacific time which makes it 1-2am home time. It's hard to remember that just because it is only 8pm here that the family and friends are probably in bed since it is 11pm..

More later....

This morning we first went to see the Klondike which is a paddle wheel passenger and freight ship. The size of the paddle wheel is impressive in size.

This is a couple views of the ship, one of the dining area for first class passengers.

We then went to the Berginia interpretive center and saw a film about this piece of the continent, whic was not covered by glaciers but was almost surrounded by them. This made it the perfect place for Wolly mammoths to live and here is a pic of a skeleton plus some other animals.
This WAS a big ass beaver!
This was a giant sloth.
This was a very large short faced bear.

The worlds largest weather can, a DC3 airplane mounted on a post that pivots with the wind.
This is at the transportation museum.

As we drove into the campground there were some old military vehicles probably used for building the Alaskan highway.

And finally some pictures along the way
