Canada day 2

September 30
th, 2008 Temp 62* and rainy

We it started raining during the night and pretty much carried through to the morning with heavy down pours at times. Judy called about 8:30 and wanted to know if we were ready to go metal detecting, and of course we were not! Were on vacation and in slow mode and with the rain off and on we didn't make it out till probably 10:00 that day. She had permission to hunt a field across from her property were an old 1800's cabin stood at one time so we really wanted to find it's location in hopes of some really old stuff. Deanna started out first thing right in the drive way and found a $2 toonie they call them, its just a $2 coin that is silver with a gold insert in it, in the same hole she also found a quarter. So far I have found NOTHING :) she goes a bit further and finds a 1942 Canadian Penny and she is really doing well as Judy nor myself have yet to find anything.

We got to the suggested location of the old cabin and started searching for square nails as an indicator we were in the right location but never did find any. Judy and Deanna started finding old musket balls though and ended up with about 5 of them. Finally hunger got the best of us and we headed for lunch and waited for a friend of Judys, Louisa who we call Wezzie on the forum. When we got back Wezzie was waiting on us and we had lunch and visited before we headed back to the spot.

After returning Deanna and I were hunting one part of a field and not finding much and Judy was in the area of the cabin and found some cool stuff, no coins but found an old Military British Navy button from the EARLY 1800's and a buckle along with some more musket balls and an old spoon. Meanwhile Wezzie was hunting the perimeter of a field and found a 1901 Large Canadian cent! She called us over and we all searched that area pretty well but only other thing found was a dollar coin I came across and some broken arrowheads just spotted on the ground. Wezzie found a fantastic but broken Spear head. Deanna found another quarter and I found one more musket ball. We decided to call that hunt done so we could head back to the house for supper.

While waiting on the meal to be prepared Judy suggested to Wezzie that she try her hay field that had just been cut, so Wezzie and I grabbed our detectors and headed out for that. I hadn't been there 2 minutes and found the oldest coin ever for me, it was an 1876 Large Canadian Cent! I was extremely happy to find one of these! We hunted that field for about 45 minutes and that was the extent of my finds and Wezzie found a buckle of some kind.

For supper Judy and Joe fixed us grilled steak and shrimp with mashed potatoes! What a meal and WAY to much food for us especially for as late as it was in the evening. So we ate more than we needed but enjoyed it. Spent the rest of the evening visiting again and planned a hunt at a local park for tomorrow. Thursday we are going to Niagara Falls and the lake.

Canada Day 1

September 29th, 2008 Monday 65* cloudy

We arrived today in Canada to visit a friend I made on one of the metal detecting forums, her name is Judy. Judy and her husband Joe live on 20 acres in Ontario that is along the Grand River and what a beautiful sight it is to see. They have the property all cleared right down to the water and have a fire ring and lots of firewood. Our trip through customs was no problem, they asked for passports, if the truck and rv belonged to us, were we carrying any guns and that was it we were on our way! Kind of goofy getting use to them having Kilometers for speed and most of what we did was a maximum of about 50 mph. Takes forever to get anywhere :) But we arrived no problem to an excellent welcome sign and they parked us down by the river for the view when we wake up. NOW, let me not pass over how I had to thread the rv thru a couple of trees to get into the property, with the entrance being basically a 90 degree turn off a narrow road. The front right fender almost pushing over a post and the left rear of the rv missing a tree by literally 1inch! VERY CLOSE! But we got into position and got set up just fine. Of course they had sunny weather all the week before but now it is cloudy and raining as can be expected! Little hard to produce electricity with solar panels when there is nothing but clouds out! A little generator use will be in order at least for today.

So first Judy gives us a big welcome basket to Canada and their home which included some popcorn and homemade sticky buns and some coins (metal detecting trip remember :) ) and a real nice card! Inside the card was a note that I was going on a treasure hunt that afternoon. So with rain threatening Judy was anxious to get me started. There were 6 coins all together for me to find and each one I found had another clue to the location of the next. She actually made it to easy from being to anxious to, that she kept telling me COLD COLD WARMER HOT! LOL Anyway I found all 6 coins in a short time and all of them were really cool Canadian coins and old ones

For dinner she fixed spaghetti with meatballs and homemade sauce and bread! WOW was it good, we normally only eat one meal a day and it is at noon time so this was a way late meal for us but SOOOO goood! We finished our meal had some coffee and then headed down to the river to make a fire. We sat around the fire till about 11 that night just talking and trying to avoid the smoke that kept chasing us! Finally we had enough and had to call it a night as it was a long day from traveling and visiting

OH, one neat thing I forgot to mention. I found 2 holes were snapping turtles had buried their eggs and that had hatched. Pretty cool, the one hole was just out in front of our rv and there were 2 turtles who did not make it to the water, the other hole was in the field we hunted, lots of broken egg shells but no turtles in sight.

Bailing out!

September 26, 2008 Friday, Stormy 62*

Well it began raining in the middle of the night as a coastal storm approached Cape Cod. When I got up around 7am to take the dog out it was just lightly misting, shortly thereafter it began raining. Watching the weather channel it showed the Coastal Storm producing up to 6" of rain over the next couple of days and then Tropical Storm Kyle is setting its sights on Cape Cod! The campground was already beginning to get flooded from what little rain we already had and considering we were gonna stay until Monday morning and it was gonna be raining till then we opted to bail out while we could. We left the campground around 11am and headed towards Buffalo New York. We arrived in Verona NY, around 5pm and that put about 300 miles between us and the storm. Still some minor rain but out of the bad stuff. So we are gonna sit here till monday morning and just chill out.

Oh, by the way. The town of Oneida is right here which is the company that makes the Silverware.

Coastal Storm WHAT!!!

September 25th, 2008 Thursday 48* and Cloudy

Shortly we are gonna go metal detecting and not a minute to late! There is a coastal storm coming in and is already hitting the Carolina's. Suppose to get plenty of rain starting later this afternoon and into the weekend :( . Guess we have been lucky to have the weather we have so far. It has been getting into the high 30's at night here but warms into the high 50's low 60's pretty quick if the sun comes out. We'll see what happens today with it being cloudy.

Oh, for those interested I paid $4.29 for fuel yesterday

Remodeling the Rock?????

September 24th, 2008 65* sunny

We arrived in Mass late on Tuesday night. LONG trip! Only 500 miles but time wise WAY to long. We left at 7:30am and should have been there by 5 no later than 6pm, we stopped along the way in Scranton Pa to visit a friend of mine for a few minutes. Tom is a fellow metal detectorist and I wanted to meet him in person so we stopped. I was suppose to go hunting with him and a couple of other guys but due to getting ill earlier last week it just was not in the cards.

Anyway, we got hung up by an accident in Hartford Conn, for about 45 minutes, had trouble finding a place to eat if you can imagine that! Well we finally found a subway to eat at, crappy food for sure, bun was hard never the amount of meat as they show on the commercials where the bun is lifted off by 2" of meat! So we ate anyway cause we were hungry and headed back for the highway. We are on the ramp with a rock wall to our left dividing the ramp and the highway, we just clear the ramp and instantly in front of us appears a VERY LARGE DEER MID LEAP! We literally missed it by 1 sec, otherwise it would have been IN the cab with us! That was a bit of an eye opener to start our trip back out on!

We ended up arrivin at the campground around 7:45 in the dark! The last 1o miles was the worst we had a hell of a time with getting thru what they call round a bouts, to us it is a traffic circle with too many turnoffs! Miss one and your on for a ride, there is no turning around and going back OHHHH NOOO you gotta go 2 miles to get turned around. I shit you not we missed that friggin thing at least 4 TIMES! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! But anyway we got here and hooked up and decided to hit the bed early.

Wednesday morning, wake up and the temp is 39* brrrrrrrr! We decided we would do some sight seeing today. All we really wanted to do was get to the ocean and walk on the beach! NOT! Every place we went was private!!! SUCKS! Finally got onto a semi private beach when we got to my friend Ricks place! DAMN! So we walked out to the water and I tested the temp COLD! Not walking in that! We went with Rick to a place called the Red Parrot, basically a sea food Restaurant. Rick ordered the fishermans catch, we just knew it was gonna be too much so we split one! We did and still left STUFFED! Great food though, fish, scallops, shrimp the size of a sparrow, clams fries and onion rings! WOW!

So back to the title! We go to Plymouth Rock park, this is where it all started in 1620, we had major with us so we were kind of limited on how much we could do. They have a mock up of the Mayflower, we walked out onto the peir an got some pics then went to find "The ROCK" Hmmm it is under construction! WHAT THE HELL IS THERE TO RECONSTUCT! They were building a huge monument over the rock and you could still look thru a window and see it below but not like you could touch it :( But we saw it! Cool downtown area with lots of shops and eateries.

Tomorrow we are gonna meet Rick and do some metal detecting.

Resting in Gettysburg

September 21st 2008 Sunday Temp 72*

Well we arrived here at Gettysburg on the 13th. We originally had planned on not getting here till Sunday but changed our minds and drove straight thru. After arriving we had some reservations issues and had to take a different spot till the next day but that was our fault for coming in early even though they said our site was open. We got set up and awaited the arrival of Ken and Kathy the next day.

So Sunday night Kathy arrived with the Rig and I helped her get set up but Ken was in Virginia at a show and had a drive to get home. We visited a while and called it an early evening.

Monday Ken and Kathy need to run to the bank to make a deposit in Maryland which is just 20 miles or so away. On the way back we stopped at a Pizza hut and decided to eat their buffet. I know better than this having gotten food poisoning for one before but against better judgment did it anyway. Wrong move, before we even let it was already attacking me requiring my visit to the restroom. Kathy got it too just not as bad as me and we had both ate the same thing, some kind of pasta. We ended up extending our stay so I could try to recover more before continuing on. We did make it into town a couple of times but not near like we had hoped. Today (Sunday) we were suppose to leave to make a stop in Scranton to meets some friends from the Metal Detecting Forum I go to and hunt with them. Well that had to be put off, so I will have to come back another time and do that.

Now hopefully we can get back on schedule and leave for Cape Cod on Tuesday Morning. I had hoped to do daily posts but conditions didn't allow for anything intersting. I have taken a few pics and have posted them. Some are of Ken Kathy and Deanna at a place called O'Rileys where we had lunch. Others were from the new visitor center here in Gettysburg.

Saturday night we were watching for the International Space Station to fly over which we saw. You can find out when it is flying over you here Flyover

Back to the Battlefield

September 14th, 2008 Temp 75* Cloudy

Well time for me to get back to blogging for our trip. We are off on a 3 week venture. We are currently at our Home park in Pennsylvania which is the Gettysburg Battlefield Campground. We drove all the way here last night. We did not intend on coming all the way but at 2pm decided we could make it early enough. Total trip was 460 miles and took about 9 hours. We called ahead and asked if they had a spot for us being we were gonna be early. They said "Yeah, comeon in your spot is already empty!" So we arrive and head to our spot to find it is NOT empty :) so they assigned us a temporary spot till today when ours will be empty.

I don't know what it is about driving cause it is not hard but sure makes ya tired. By 10:30 we were ready for bed but was able to sleep a little later being we didn't have to get moving, Major even let us sleep till 7 :)

Weather is cloudy but gone be hot today prior to Hurricane Ike remnants coming thru. Suppose to be in the 90's today. Sun is peeking out at the moment. Kathy will be bringing their rv in later tonight when she finishes vending that the Hershey Rv show. Ken is in Virginia vending at a boat show, he won't get in till about midnight. Today will just be a loafing day and getting the rv moved to our spot.

Trip was uneventful so that was fortunate, we ran in and out of light rain all the way but nothing serious. SO, this is installment number 1!

For those interested here is our schedule

September 13th - 21st Gettysburg
September 21st -23rd Scranton Pa
September 23rd - 29th Cape Cod area Mass South of Boston
September29th heading toward Canada
September 30th - 4th Dunnville Canada west of Buffalo Ny.

During the Canadian stay I will not be able to update the blog due to the severe aircard charges so I will update once we are back home.
