This steps back to about the 1850's
This is Mount Redoubt from the Kenai.
We arrived in Homer today around noon, we are on what is called the Homer Spit which is just a piece of land that jaunts out at the bottom of the city about 5 miles or so. Barely wide enough for the road and business's on each side, one side the ocean borders the back of the shops and the other side is backed up by a huge marina. Many of the poles around here have eagle nests on them, there is one behind us with a mom and dad that has at least one baby in it, occasionally we see it pop its head up and look around. While down on the beach we watched an adult fly across over us with a fish in tow, the eagle was flying away and another eagle attacked it. They went talons up at each other in mid air but the one never lost the fish. I was trying to get a picture but the distance away made it hard to find them in the viewfinder.

We walked down the road a bit to some of the business's to grab a bite to eat. We found a pizza place called Finn's which cooks pizza in a wood fired oven. It was great pizza and quite reasonable at $21 for a 12" pepperoni and drink and with a view of the ocean behind us we saw a couple seals as we waited. After lunch we walked down to the beach and around town, many are based on homemade type goods or clothing. The fishing vessel Time Bandit is home based here if you watch Deadliest Catch. Andy and Johnathon Hilstrand operate the boat and their mother maintains a store in town selling goods related to the fishing vessel her boys operate.
When we left the Kenai campground we saw some caribou out in the mud flats and shortly after being out on the Sterling highway we came across a moose.

The trip was only about 90 miles or so and about 5600 miles driven so far. On the way Dale wanted to stop and get some pictures,of an old Russian church.

The church sits up on a hill and overlooks a small town called Ninilchik.
In the background you can see one of the four volcanos in the area. The one you see is Mount Iliamna with a summit of 10,013 and although this one is not known to have erupted it has spewed steam but there has been a lot of small earthquakes with magnitudes of 3. Along the way we came across a board that noted where we were currently was 52 miles from the volcano even though it does not look that far. We could see this from our previous campground along with Mount Redoubt which had erupted back in 2009. It recorded more than 19 events over a period of a week. Ash plumes reached 50,000 feet and ash fall closed the anchorage airport for about 14 hours. There are 2 other volcanos Mount Douglas which is north near the Cook Inlet and Mount Augustine which is 70 miles from Homer off the west shore. These volcanos form what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Tomorrow will be tourist day and we may take a boat ride to a town across the water called Seldovia.
