Civil war digs!

June 28th, 2008 Saturday 78* sunny

Yesterday I made a 140 mile one way trip to meet a couple of guys off the metal detecting forum I go to. Mike lives in Greeneville Tennessee and Carl from Louisiana came up also. We spent the better part of a day searching a field that belongs to Mikes wife's grandfather. I had no luck but Mike found 2 civil war bullets and Carl found 1, both found several miniballs. I managed to find a pepsi can 10" deep :) then I found a dead turtle of large size, but was probably 18" in length (shell only). Ground was REALLY hard as they are down almost 20" of rain for the year.

The day before we went in search of more falls. I found a couple online, one was called Virgin Falls and the other was Burgess Falls. We attempted to find Virgin falls first as it was the closest ....as a bird flies! 11 miles but to drive there was 30 miles! Anyway, we found the park and had to drive about 6 miles down a gravel one lane road to get there. We were following another car who was not wasting any time getting back there. When we finally caught up with them I asked is this where the falls are? Their reply was "No, go back 2 miles and park and follow the trail 5 miles to the falls!" Don't think so! Next destination was Burgess Falls. This one we found with no problems as it was well marked along the way. This park actually had 3 waterfalls along the 3/4 mile trail. The last fall being the largest which you could walk to the bottom but not me, not today! It was a long way down there! It would be a pretty impressive falls if the river were up and flowing fast!

Well, the last 3 weeks have flown by and coming to an end quickly. Tomorrow morning we leave for home. The trip will be about 420 miles. The truck has done well on this trip. Averaging about 10mpg pulling and the last tank of fuel I put in averaged 17.4 mpg while sightseeing. That is about the best yet.
